The country of Guatemala is located in Central America, near the Honduras, and just south of Mexico. Originally a Mayan Civilization believed to have been settled around the 1st century AD, Guatemala has undergone many changes since the early days of tribal life. The Mayans were very artistic and quite advanced mathematically considering the engineering involved in constructing the many pyramids found in Guatemala. Guatemala has many mountains and even volcanoes. The Caribbean coast is beautiful most of the year, however, it is vulnerable to occasional hurricanes during the hurricane season. With a population of around 15 million, Republica de Guatemala, still retains nearly half of the native Indians who, to this day, still speak the original Indian Languages. Ever heard of Quiche, Cakchiquel, Kekchi, Mam, Garifuna, and Xinca? No, these are not foods, they are the names of several languages still spoken today in Central America. About half of the country's GDP comes from Agriculture, bananas, sugar cane, corn etc. Ranching is also a large portion of the GDP. Plenty of industry is located there as well, they make furniture, textiles, and rubber. Tourism is also a big in Republica de Guatemala. The best time to visit is between November and May, the dry season. According the the LonelyPlanet possible diseases to watch out for are cholera, dengue fever, malaria, hepatitis and typhoid. The Spanish ruled this area for around 300 years, until the early 1820's. Today, free elections are held and Guatemala, or Republica de Guatemala, is a free and independent country. Perhaps the Survivors' will chew on sugar cane for extra energy. In it's natural form, you can cut it open and chew on the core for a sweet treat. Get ready for Survivor11 - Guatemala.
