Survivor Palau, the 10th season, is being held on a Pacific island in Micronesia. Other more familiar islands in the area are the Marshalls and Guam. These islands are all located in the Philippine Sea. Known for incredibly clear waters and over 1500 species of fish, this is the place to scuba dive. A rich assortment of plants, corals and sea animals, divers and scientist as well as tourists flock here to swim in the clear waters. With a Polynesian population of less than 20,000, this is a friendly and fun place to be. Major industries are fishing, crafts and tourism. The major hazards in this area are dengue fever, typhoid, Filariasis and jellyfish sting. Also avoid June through August, unless you want to experience a typhoon. The festivals and weather are best in February and March. Much less rain too. Currency is the U.S. Dollar, and travel expenses average about $200 per day. The foods commonly eaten in Palau are traditional Palauan. According to the Lonely Planet (see bibliography links below) they like coconut milk and meat (copra), cassava (tapioca), sweet potatoes and all sorts of fish and seafood. Some Palauans chew betel nut to catch a buzz, which when mixed with lime powder produces copious amounts of bright red spit. Old-time chewers are noted by their red teeth, newcomers by the stains on their chins and shirts. The original inhabitants of Palau are believed to have arrived around 1000 B.C., from Indonesia. The Spanish are said to have arrived around 1543. And by 1686 they liked it so much they claimed it as their own. Spain sold the Islands during the Spanish-American war, to Germany. Japan took it in 1914 and held on until the second world war. In 1994, Palau declared independence from its Trust and is free and democratic today.
